Harmanpreet Kaur played a captain’s knock in the WPL 2024 opener against Delhi Capitals. The defending champions won the game by 4 wickets in 20 overs. Needing 5 runs off 1 ball, Sajeevan Sajana hit a six to lead her team to an emphatic win.
The MI dugout was over the moon as the match was heading towards Delhi, but Sanjana, who was playing in her debut game, sealed it in favour of the Mumbai-based franchise.
Earlier, Mumbai won the toss and elected to bowl first. DC women amassed 171/5 in 20 overs, with Alice Capsey scoring 75 runs off 53 balls, with the help of 8 fours and 3 sixes.
Apart from her, Jemimah Rodrigues hit an aggressive 42 off 24 deliveries, with 5 fours and 2 sixes.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr took two wickets each for Mumbai. The top order of MI women contributed, but the flurry of wickets in the death overs put them on the back foot. Yastika Bhatia (57), Harmanpreet (55), Amelia Kerr (24) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (19) looked impressive with the bat.
Captain Harmanpreet stayed till the last over, but her dismissal almost sealed the game in Delhi’s favour before Sanjana’s last-ball heroics took Mumbai to a stunning win.
For Delhi, Arundhati Reddy and Alice dismissed two batters each.
