• The Alfa Romeo CEO has confirmed that the Giulietta won’t get a successor.
  • The company won’t re-enter the hatchback segment because customers want SUVs.
  • The Alfa Romeo Tonale serves as an indirect successor of the discontinued model.

Alfa Romeo won’t launch a new hatchback, leaving the Tonale as its sole offering in the compact segment. The CEO of the Italian brand confirmed that the Giulietta won’t be part of the future Alfa Romeo lineup, because customers want SUVs.

The sad news for hatchback aficionados were share by Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo’s new CEO, during an interview with French media L’Argus. After revealing information about the upcoming Stelvio and Giulia, Ficilli debunked rumors about a new hatchback: “Honestly, at the moment, I don’t see a future for a Giulietta because there is no demand for a compact sedan. Today, the Giulietta is the Tonale.”

The Alfa Romeo boss admitted of being a fan of the nameplate, blaming market conditions for the decision to steer away from the segment: “I’ve had 20 Giuliettas in my life and it’s a fantastic car, even now. But we have to follow market demand and customers want SUVs. And we have to sell cars.”

The Giulietta nameplate was first used on a 2+2 coupe that debuted in 1954, later joined by a four-door sedan, and a roadster. The second iteration appeared in 1977, exclusively offered in sedan form. Finally, the Giulietta hatchback – originally intended to adopt the Milano moniker – was brought to life in 2010, and remained in production until 2020.

A new Giulietta would rival the likes of the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, and Mercedes A-Class, although the latter is going to face the axe after the end of the current generation.

The most plausible scenario for the stillborn project would be to ride on the STLA Medium platform, allowing it to be offered with EV and hybrid powertrain options. These underpinnings will be shared among many future crossovers, SUVs, and hatchbacks from nearly all Stellantis brands, contributing to the economy of scale.

Still, with hatchbacks losing ground on sales volume against the significantly more popular SUVs, it was to be expected that a brand like Alfa Romeo would rather focus on more profitable segments. After all, the same happened with the discontinued Mito supermini that has now been replaced by the Junior small SUV.

Rumors about a potential return of the nameplate were fueled by the previous CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, who said in 2023 that “I’m not sure that we don’t make money, even on a hatchback”. While this statement left a window of possibility for a new generation of the Giulietta, it is now clear that Alfa Romeo has lost interest in such an offering.

According to the strategy outlined by Imparato, the brand will be launching one new model every year. Following the debuts of the Tonale, Junior, Stelvio, and Giulia from 2023 to 2026, the company is expected to unveil a flagship SUV/crossover in 2027, tailored for the US market.
