As the IPL 2024 season approaches, Shikhar Dhawan, the skipper of Punjab Kings, is determined to make the upcoming tournament a memorable one for himself and his team. The veteran cricketer has been diligently working on enhancing his fitness in preparation for the highly anticipated T20 competition.

Known for his consistent performance at the top of the order, Dhawan expressed confidence and optimism about the upcoming season, highlighting his commitment to the team’s success. The 38-year-old sees the IPL 2024 as an opportunity to return to competitive cricket after a notable absence.

Once hailed as one of the most dependable performers for the Indian squad in ICC tournaments, Dhawan has been absent from the national side due to the emergence of young talents in the top order. Players like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have shown consistent form making it tough for the veteran to make a comeback. Determined to reclaim his spot, Dhawan has been putting in the hard yards at the nets, gearing up for a productive IPL season.

Purchased by Punjab Kings for Rs 8.5 crore during the IPL 2022 auction, Dhawan assumed the captaincy role in the subsequent year, succeeding Mayank Agarwal. Despite the team’s forgettable performances in the last two editions, Dhawan remains hopeful of a stronger showing in IPL 2024.

Discussing his preparations, Dhawan emphasized his focus on overall fitness and gameplay to contribute effectively to his team’s success during the tournament. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Dhawan outlined his intent, with winning the IPL trophy being the primary objective.

“The IPL preparations are on track. Currently, I’m concentrating on my fitness, honing my skills, and visualization. I envision a strong performance from myself in the upcoming season,” he said on News 18.

“Our main goal is to help Punjab Kings in clinching the trophy, while also adhering to a strong process and preparation,” he added.

Dhawan also highlighted his leadership role, emphasizing the creation of a positive and nurturing environment within the team.

“My focus is to move from point A to point B with enjoyment. Additionally, I aim to establish a fantastic environment where all the boys are happy, true to themselves, and giving their best. As a leader, that’s my role,” he concluded.

Having showcased consistency for the Kings since joining the franchise, Dhawan is keen on building on his past performances.

In the 2022 season, the left-hander scored an impressive 460 runs in 14 matches, followed by 373 runs in 11 matches the following year, maintaining an impressive average of 41.

As the IPL 2024 unfolds, all eyes will be on Shikhar Dhawan as he leads Punjab Kings intending to secure the coveted trophy.
