Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer spoke about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at the recently held CEAT Cricket Awards.
Indian players have lauded Rohit for allowing them to express themselves during the matches. The approach has played a significant role in the team’s success in international cricket.
Shami stated that Rohit gets angry when the players fail to execute the plans on the field.
“Rohit Sharma gives you freedom as a captain. But when you cannot live up to the expectations and fail to execute the plans, he gets angry,” Shami said.
Shreyas Iyer agreed with the fast bowler and said that Indian players are now used to Rohit’s way of communication.
“Shami is right. We know how Rohit will react in a particular situation and what will happen in another situation. We understand him as we have been playing together for years. We know what he feels,” he said.
Rohit habitually abuses his teammates and even scolds them during the games. He charged towards Washington Sundar when the latter pulled out of his delivery stride a few times during the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
“This is how I want to be on the field”: Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was given the Men’s International Cricketer of the Year award at the function. He reacted to Shami and Iyer’s comments, saying he is like that on the field and doesn’t want to change.
‘I have to be myself on the field, and this is how I react during the matches. I keep telling my players to be themselves, but for that to happen, I have to be myself as well,” he said.
Rohit Sharma will lead India in the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh.
