Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif said that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be Rohit Sharma’s last tournament in ODIs. The veteran has already retired from Test cricket and T20Is, and Kaif expects Rohit to pass the baton to Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old is the Test captain and was recently appointed vice-captain in the T20 format. There are speculations that Gill will replace Rohit as skipper in the fifty-over format.

Kaif expects Gill to become an all-format leader. “Gill has amassed 2000 runs in the last three years. He is the future captain in ODIs and T20Is. He is leading India in Test and is the vice-captain for the T20 Asia Cup. Rohit is 38 and will retire after the 2027 ODI World Cup. When he leaves, Gill will become the captain,” Kaif said.

Gill was not part of India’s squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. He was given the captain’s armband for the T20I series against Zimbabwe. After the series, he played the fifty-over format and red-ball cricket. He will play his first T20 game after 2024. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, highlighted the reason behind Gill’s promotion.

“He has leadership qualities and he exceeded our expectations in England Test series. It is good for the team as captain is always under pressure,” Agarkar said.

Gill has scored 578 runs in 21 T20Is at an average of 30.42, with a strike rate of 139.27.
