Amid Shubman Gill’s ongoing challenges in Test cricket, former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has passionately discussed the young Indian opener’s recent struggles. Despite excelling in white-ball formats, Gill has faced difficulties in the longest format of the game. He has often fallen short of expectations for a top-order batter.

Heading into the Test series, Gill averaged 32, which raised concerns about his ability to anchor the Indian innings. In the first innings of the opening Test, Gill seemed to retreat into a defensive approach after a strong start by Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pressure mounted on Gill, leading to an attempted aggressive shot against debutant Tom Hartley, resulting in his dismissal for a modest 23 off 66 deliveries.

Kevin Pietersen expressed visible concern over Gill’s approach, emphasizing the importance of rotating the strike in Test cricket. Despite acknowledging Gill’s batting prowess, Pietersen insisted that the young batter must diversify his skills to avoid recurring dismissals. Drawing from his own transformative experience with Rahul Dravid, Pietersen offered insights into Gill’s development.

“He’s got someone in the dressing room who transformed my game, ‘Rahul Dravid’. Spend time with Gill and teach him the same techniques Dravid shared with me. Encourage him to strike the ball on the offside, work on judging lengths, and practice rotating the strike. Help him improve as a player by focusing on these aspects,” he said during a Lunch show on Jiocinema.

Pietersen further highlighted that Gill, despite being a quality player, needs to develop the ability to rotate the strike.

” Gill is very talented but he has to learn to rotate the strike. He’s young. Provide him with that skill, give him that guidance. If he learns to rotate the strike from Rahul Dravid, and the world is his if Dravid takes him under his wings,” he added.
