Aakash Chopra has said that Ravichandran Ashwin has started a new trend by retiring from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and expressing his desire to play in the overseas leagues. He questioned whether other players would follow Ashwin’s example.
Ashwin, who retired from international cricket last year, bid adieu to the IPL on August 27. The spinner took 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.20 in 221 IPL matches.
“R Ashwin has said goodbye to the Indian Premier League and he is now going to play in different leagues across the globe. He has started a new trend. He was impressive in the IPL, but all good things come to an end, and his story has ended. Are other Indian cricketers going to play in other leagues?” he said.
Aakash is confident of Ashwin getting a franchise where he decides to play but also noted that players will lose a lot of money if they decide to leave IPL.
“Wherever he gives his name, he is going to get picked by a franchise, and he will do well. Indian players are not allowed to be a part of other leagues to maintain the novelty of the IPL. You have to retire from international cricket and the IPL to play in other tournaments. You can go and play somewhere else if you say bye-bye to IPL money,” he added.
Chopra reckoned that only a handful of Indian cricketers would follow Ashwin.
“Only a few players will follow his example. He was bought for INR 9.75 crore but decided to try himself somewhere else. It is impossible for every player. If someone gets less money or goes unsold in other leagues. If you are getting good money in IPL, why would you leave? Ashwin has taken a different route, but not too many Indian players will join him,” he concluded.
