Former India player Sunil Gavaskar had to deal with the tricky question of picking a destructive pair in the IPL. During the IPL 2024 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, Andre Russell and Rinku Singh were smashing the bowlers for boundaries and sixes.

The two were looking unstoppable. Gavaskar, who was in the commentary box, was asked if these two are the most destructive pair or if there is someone else who comes close to them.

The legendary batter quickly took the names of Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell, who play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. “I think Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell can cause a log of damage with the bat,” he said.

When his fellow commentator Padam asked him to choose one among the two pairs, he answered diplomatically. “Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell play proper cricketing shots while Rinku and Russell rely on unorthodox strokes to score their runs,” he said.

He was uninterested in naming one and revealed the differences between the two pairs.

For the record, Virat and Maxwell haven’t stitched any big partnership due to the latter’s failure in the 17th season. On the other hand, Rinku and Russell haven’t got a chance to face a lot of balls together in a couple of matches due to the brilliant performances of the other batters.

Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Delhi Capitals by 106 runs to record their third win from as many matches. They are leading the points table with 6 points and a better net run-rate from Rajasthan Royals.
