Virat Kohli surpasses Rahul Dravid’s record in the first Test against South Africa

In a remarkable feat, star batsman Virat Kohli has surged past head coach Rahul Dravid to claim the third spot in the list of leading run-scorers in Tests in South Africa. At the start, Kohli required just 16 runs to surpass Dravid’s record of 1252 runs in 25 matches.

Kohli’s next target is former Indian opener Virender Sehwag. Sehwag holds the second position with 1306 Test runs in 15 matches in South Africa. However, the summit of the elite list is currently occupied by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who boasts 1741 Test runs in 25 Tests.

Facing a challenging start in the Boxing Day Test, Kohli was dropped at 4 runs by Tony de Zorzi. The South African pacers were lethal in the first session. Undeterred, the master batter capitalized on the opportunity, crafting sublime shots and reaching 33 runs at Lunch on Day 1.

Despite India losing three early wickets and staggering at 24-3, Kohli and Shreyas Iyer formed a resilient partnership. South Africa’s missed opportunities, including a dropped catch of Iyer, resulted in an unbroken 67-run alliance at Lunch.

SuperSports Park, with its favorable conditions for bowlers, poses a significant challenge. Kohli, with his impressive track record of three centuries in South Africa, emerges as a pivotal player for India. The team relies on his prowess to bolster their chances, as they look for a maiden Test series victory in South Africa.
