There were reports that Virat might open with Rohit Sharma. Now with Kohli out, head coach Rahul Dravid, confirmed that Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with the hitman. With the opening slot confirmed, the No.3 position is up for grabs and Shubman Gill is considered to take up that place by many experts.

Former keeper Saba Karim also touted for Gill to bat at No.3 and stated that he is the ideal candidate to take Virat’s place in the first T20I against Afghanistan.

“At position No. 3, there are occasions when you need to bat during the powerplay and sometimes after it. However, the ultimate goal should be to play impactful shots and increase the scoring rate quickly upon entering. I believe Shubman has the capability to excel in the No. 3 batting position.”

“In the present times, I believe Rahul Dravid’s approach is geared towards nurturing young players who possess diverse skills and versatility, capable of batting at various positions. Hence, I think Shubman is the perfect candidate for the No. 3 position, even though he understands that his opportunities might be limited.”
