Planning a summer road trip? A fantastic region of Germany has one of the world’s best journeys to take behind the wheel.

The Alpenstrasse, or the German Alpine Road, takes in some of Bavaria’s most incredible sights.

Germany’s oldest tourist route, the Alpine Road is often described as one of Europe’s must-do experiences.

The route runs for 484km from Lindau on the shores of Lake Constance to Schönau on Lake Königssee.

Along the way, tourists have the chance to stop at Neuschwanstein Castle, Mount Zugspitze and the Scheidegg waterfalls.

For motoring enthusiasts, the route offers the chance to try their hand at the Oberjoch Pass and its 106 bends.

The curved road blends in beautifully with the surrounding countryside and tourists should make sure to stop at viewpoints for photographs.

Fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Bavaria’s top attractions and was the inspiration for the Disney castle.

Lake Königssee is a gorgeous natural lake close to the border with Austria. Tourists can take a boat trip on the lake or go for a hike in the surrounding hills.

‘SimoneR1986’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “This is a beautiful road taking you through some of the beautiful scenery and quintessential Bavarian villages southern Germany and Austria have to offer.”

The Alpenstrasse can be driven from either direction and there are signs on both sides of the route to guide tourists.
