Australia’s U19 cricket captain, Hugh Weibgen, is gearing up for a formidable challenge as his team faces Uday Saharan’s India in the U19 World Cup 2024 final at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday, February 11. Following a nail-biting semi-final against Pakistan, Weibgen expressed his anticipation of a tough battle against the Indian squad.

In the semi-final clash on February 8, Australia found themselves in a precarious situation, with the match going down to the wire. Weibgen, who had undoubtedly experienced heightened tension during the game, witnessed his team secure a thrilling victory over Pakistan by just one wicket. Now, with his sights set on the U19 World Cup title, Weibgen aims to lead Australia to their fourth championship after previous triumphs in 1988, 2002, and 2010.

“We acknowledge that India is a strong team, and they will play with great determination. We embrace the challenge and the competition, we eagerly anticipate the upcoming match and are excited about the fight ahead,” he said expressing confidence in his team’s ability to face the upcoming formidable opponent.

Reflecting on the semi-final triumph, where Australia found themselves at 164 for 9 while chasing a target of 180, Weibgen highlighted the impressive performance of Raf MacMillan and Callum Vidler. With 17 runs needed off the last 24 balls, the duo held their nerve, guiding Australia to a thrilling victory.

Weibgen revealed that he was also tense himself. “We trusted Vids (Vidler) and Raf to finish the task, and there was a mix of emotions in the dressing room. I felt both tense and excited. I’m still not entirely sure about the details, but the experience was truly amazing,” he added.

On the other side of the pitch, India aims to secure their sixth U19 World Cup title. Notably, they have previously defeated Australia in the final matches of the tournament in 2012 and 2018. Furthermore, India is vying to become only the second team, following Pakistan (2004 and 2006), to successfully defend their U19 World Cup title.

As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the clash between these two cricketing powerhouses, the U19 World Cup 2024 final promises to be an enthralling encounter filled with fierce competition and a quest for glory.
